Luxury Sofas: Frame, Upholstery, Cover

A sofa is the piece of furniture with the highest daily usage and the largest proportion of invisible technology. This page conceptually opens it from the inside out: frame, suspension, upholstery, cover.

The frame determines the lifespan

A sofa frame made of glued and doweled solid wood will last for decades and can be re-upholstered. A stapled frame made of pressed wood will not: it will give way at the corners, and the staple strip will no longer hold when re-upholstering. You rarely recognize the difference from a photo, but almost always from the specifications and the weight. For our sofas, the frame type is listed in the technical table.

Suspension and upholstery construction

Above the frame is the suspension, usually webbing or No-Sag springs. On top of that comes the upholstery construction. Pure feather is the softest and most maintenance-intensive construction; it needs to be fluffed daily. Pure foam holds its shape and appears firmer. The mix of a foam core with a feather wrap is the usual compromise: it doesn't collapse and still doesn't need constant tidying.

Seating depth is a decision, not a detail

A seating depth of about 60 centimeters is upright and suitable for everyday use; it's easy to get up. From 70 centimeters, you sit in a reclining position, which is comfortable but requires back cushions and becomes uncomfortable for smaller people. The depth also determines the cushions: deep sofas need large, firm cushions, while shallow sofas can only tolerate a few.

Cover, rug, surroundings

The cover determines daily life: tightly woven flat weaves and leather last the longest, velvet has the greatest color depth, and bouclé has the most texture. Under the sofa, a rug should at least accommodate the front feet; otherwise, the seating group will appear to float. One or two armchairs opposite turn a row of seats into a conversation circle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I recognize a good sofa frame?

By the specification "solid wood, doweled" and by the weight. A light three-seater sofa almost never has a solid wood frame.

What is the correct seating depth?

About 60 centimeters for upright sitting and easy standing up, from 70 centimeters for reclining sitting with back cushions.

How large must the rug under the sofa be?

At least large enough for the front feet to stand on it. It is better if the entire seating group stands on it.
