Eichholtz Table Lamps

Eichholtz Table Lamps

Table lamps provide the light that makes a room habitable in the evening. They are positioned at the eye level of a seated person, creating islands rather than flat surfaces and showcasing materials up close. Eichholtz table lamps feature bases made of marble, crystal, ceramic, and brass, complemented by shades of fabric or glass.

Where to place a table lamp

On the console table in the entrance, on the dresser, on the side table next to the armchair, and on the nightstand. As a rule: two to three table lamps per living space, distributed at different heights and walls. Only then will you achieve the depth that a ceiling light alone can never create.

The correct height

Next to an armchair, consider the eye level of the seated person: The lower edge of the shade should be approximately at this height, to prevent the light source from glaring. On a nightstand, the lower edge of the shade should ideally be at about shoulder height when seated. On a console table, the lamp can be taller; here, the proportion to the mirror above it is important: Together, the lamp and mirror should not fill the entire wall.

Shade, base, and proportion

The shade diameter should be approximately the width of the base plus one third, and the shade height about one third of the total height. Fabric shades diffuse light softly and warm it, while glass and metal shades direct it more downward, which is better for reading. A heavy base made of marble or crystal prevents tipping, especially on narrow side tables.

Light source and control

Warm white at around 2700 Kelvin is the appropriate light color for living spaces; it makes brass and wood appear elegant. Dimmable light sources are the most affordable way to create atmosphere. For visible sockets, the light source is part of the design, so a model with a decorative glass bulb is worthwhile here. How to layer table lamps with floor lamps and ceiling lights is explained in the guide Eichholtz Lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a table lamp next to an armchair be?

High enough so that the lower edge of the shade is approximately at the eye level of the seated person. This way, you will not see the light source directly.

How many table lamps does a room need?

Two to three, distributed across different walls and heights. Several small islands of light create a much better effect in the evening than a single bright source.

Which shade suits which base?

As a guideline: shade diameter approximately base width plus one third, shade height about one third of the total height.
