Allow 60 to 70 centimetres width per seat, or more for stools with armrests. An island of two metres can comfortably accommodate three stools. If you wish to slide them under the counter, check the depth of the overhang: below 25 centimetres, the legs will obstruct.
With or without backrest, swivel or fixed
Backrests make longer sitting comfortable and are advisable if meals are also taken at the counter. Without a backrest, stools visually disappear and can be completely tucked under the counter. Swivel models facilitate getting on and off an island, while fixed stools are more stable. A footrest is not an accessory for tall stools, but a prerequisite for sitting longer than ten minutes.
