Eichholtz Lighting

Eichholtz Lighting

Lighting is the element of interior design that is most frequently changed and least frequently planned. Eichholtz lighting ranges from crystal chandeliers to sleek table lamps with marble bases. This page categorizes the types of luminaires by their function in a room and provides the practical dimensions that matter.

Three Levels Instead of One Ceiling Light

A room with only one ceiling light appears flat because everything is uniformly illuminated. Good lighting works in layers: ambient light from above, task lighting where reading and dining occur, and accent lighting at eye level or lower. Four to six light sources per living space are not a luxury, but a prerequisite for creating depth in the evening.

Types of Luminaires and Their Function

Chandeliers are the centerpiece above a dining table, staircase, or seating area. Ceiling lights provide ambient light in hallways and rooms with low ceilings. Wall lights bring light to eye level and soften walls, especially to the left and right of a mirror or bed. Table lamps create islands of light on consoles, sideboards, and nightstands, while floor lamps work next to armchairs and sofas, where one reads.

Practical Dimensions That Matter

Above the dining table, the luminaire hangs 75 to 85 centimeters above the tabletop, its diameter being approximately half to two-thirds of the table's width. In a staircase or over an open area, the height is determined by the view from below: the lower edge remains above head height, even on the top step. Wall lights are usually placed at 150 to 165 centimeters, lower next to the bed.

Light Color and Light Sources

Warm white light around 2700 Kelvin makes brass, wood, and textiles appear elegant; cold light deprives them of precisely this effect. Everything in the living and dining area should ideally be dimmable. Visible sockets deserve visible light sources: light sources in the appropriate format are part of the design, not an afterthought. How light interacts with other pieces is explained in the guide Luxury Lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?

75 to 85 centimeters above the tabletop. This prevents glare and does not obstruct the view across the table.

Which light color suits brass and crystal?

Warm white around 2700 Kelvin. Neutral white from 4000 Kelvin makes metal and wood appear cool and technical.

How many luminaires does a living room need?

In addition to ambient light, at least three other light sources at different heights. Several small islands of light create depth in the evening, a single ceiling light does not.
