The headboard is the largest continuous surface in the bedroom and thus determines the impression of the entire room. It provides a backrest for the bed, dampens sound, and transforms a mattress into a piece of furniture. Eichholtz headboards feature deep velvet and linen upholstery, fine quilting, and brass details.
Height and Width
A headboard makes an impact when it extends significantly beyond the mattress. As a guideline: 50 to 70 centimeters above the top edge of the mattress for normal ceiling heights; in rooms with high ceilings, it can be taller. In terms of width, there are two clean solutions: exactly as wide as the bed, or deliberately wider, so that the nightstands can be placed in front of it. The intermediate solution, an overhang of a few centimeters, appears accidental.
Fabric, Quilting, and Everyday Use
Velvet is the classic choice in the bedroom: it absorbs light, appears deep, and feels warm. Linen and bouclé are more understated and suit calm, bright rooms. Quilting adds structure to the surface without introducing a pattern. If you lean against it in the evenings, you should choose an upholstery that can be vacuumed and spot-cleaned, and opt for darker tones. In terms of color, the headboard should form a family with pillows and rugs, not three different directions.
Lighting at the Headboard
A tall headboard changes the lighting plan. Wall lights must be positioned above it, otherwise they will shine into the fabric, which usually means 110 to 130 centimeters above the floor. If there is no space, a table lamp on the nightstand can be used. How to properly separate ambient, task, and accent lighting is explained in the guide Luxury Lighting.
Headboard Without a New Bed
A headboard can almost always be retrofitted, either mounted on the wall or placed behind the existing bed frame. The only important thing is that there is no gap between the mattress and the headboard into which pillows could slip. This is the most cost-effective way to upgrade an unremarkable bedroom without replacing the bed. A bench at the foot of the bed completes the composition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a headboard be?
Approximately 50 to 70 centimeters above the mattress. In rooms with high ceilings, it may be taller, otherwise it will appear lost.
Should the headboard be wider than the bed?
Either exactly as wide or significantly wider, so that the nightstands can be placed in front of it. A small overhang appears unintentional.
Which fabric is suitable for a headboard?
Velvet for depth and warmth, linen and bouclé for calm, bright rooms. If you lean against it daily, darker, vacuumable upholstery is a better choice.
