A desk is the only workspace you voluntarily sit at if it looks good. This is precisely why a piece of furniture that does not look like office furniture is worthwhile here. Eichholtz desks work with veneered woods, leather and stone tops, brass and stainless steel frames, and appear in the living space like a console at which one happens to be working.
Proven Dimensions
The working height is 72 to 76 centimeters, which suits almost any chair. For a laptop and documents, 120 centimeters width is sufficient; it becomes comfortable from 140. In depth, 60 centimeters is the minimum, 70 to 80 are better as soon as a monitor is added: the distance to the eye should be at least an arm's length. Behind the desk, you need about one meter to push the chair back.
Where it Belongs in the Room
Working in front of the window is difficult because the screen is against the light and one is blinded. Sideways to the window is the best place: daylight comes from the side, the view goes outside, without the screen reflecting. If standing freely in the room, the desk needs a clean back, otherwise cables will be visible. Against the wall, it is more inconspicuous, but also tighter.
Lighting at the Workplace
Ceiling light alone is not enough; it casts shadows exactly where one is writing. A table lamp from the side, opposite the writing arm, solves this problem: for right-handers on the left, for left-handers on the right. The lower edge of the shade should be approximately at eye level when seated, so that no light source shines directly into the eye. Additionally, a floor lamp behind provides basic brightness to the room and reduces the harsh contrast of the screen.
The Desk as Furniture in the Living Space
To prevent the work corner from dominating the living room, the same rule applies as for consoles: a calm surface, few objects, all technical elements invisible. A rug under the table defines the zone, a wall mirror or wall art above it transforms it into a designed wall instead of a mere workspace. Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a desk be?
72 to 76 centimeters. This suits common chair heights and allows the forearms to rest horizontally on the surface.
What is the minimum size a desk should be?
120 by 60 centimeters for a laptop and documents. As soon as a monitor is added, 140 by 70 is the more comfortable size.
Should a desk be placed in front of the window?
Better sideways to the window. Directly in front, the light is blinding and the screen is against the light.
