Candlelight is the only light source that moves. It transforms an illuminated room into an evening, and it costs less than any luminaire. Eichholtz candle holders and hurricane lamps work with polished and antique brass, crystal, smoked glass, and marble, materials that absorb and reflect light instead of swallowing it.
Three Heights Instead of a Row
The most effective rule for candle holders: group them in odd numbers and at different heights. Three candlesticks of 20, 30, and 40 centimeters appear vibrant, while five of the same height look like a barrier. If you only have two pieces, do not place them symmetrically next to each other, but offset them with a third object, such as a bowl or a small vase.
On the Dining Table
At the table, a strict rule applies: either significantly below eye level or significantly above. Anything in between forces guests to talk around the flame. Hurricane lamps from 15 to 25 centimeters are the safe choice; tall candlesticks only work from about 45 centimeters upwards. The candles should be unscented, otherwise they will compete with the food. Together with the serving accessories, this creates a set table instead of just a table decoration.
Hurricane Lamp Instead of Open Flame
Outdoors and wherever there is a draft, the hurricane lamp is the practical answer. The glass protects the flame, retains wax, and allows the candle to burn longer. On the terrace, several identical hurricane lamps of different sizes belong together, on the table, on the floor next to the seating group, and on the steps. More on outdoor evening arrangements can be found in the guide Eichholtz Outdoor.
Safety and Everyday Use
Open flames require 30 centimeters of clearance upwards and to the side, away from curtains, shelves, and anything hanging. Stable, heavy holders do not tip over, which is more important on a coffee table with a glass top than any design. Brass can be polished with a soft cloth; warm water is better than scratching for removing wax residues.
Frequently Asked Questions
How tall can candles be on the dining table?
Either under 25 centimeters or over 45. At eye level, they disrupt conversation at the table.
How many candle holders belong in a group?
Three or five, at different heights. Holders of the same height in a row look like a barrier.
Candle holder or hurricane lamp?
Hurricane lamps wherever there is a draft or where children and animals are present. Open candlesticks on calm, stable surfaces with clearance above.
