St. Moritz is located at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters. This is not a mere side note, but the reason for two peculiarities that are not found with such intensity anywhere else: extremely dry air and extremely intense light.
High Altitude Air and Solid Wood
At high altitudes, the absolute humidity is low, and in heated indoor spaces, the relative humidity often drops below 20 percent in winter. This is the most extreme value in all our markets. Solid wood visibly reacts there: joints open, panels warp slightly, natural wicker becomes brittle. Light Like Nowhere Else
UV exposure increases with altitude, and there is also reflection from the snow. Textiles in south-facing positions fade faster than by the sea, even though it is cold. If you desire light fabrics, you should plan for curtains and avoid placing upholstery permanently in direct sunlight. In terms of color, the harsh light beautifully accommodates strong, rich tones, which is why velvet in petrol, rust red or fir green works exceptionally well in Engadine rooms.
Engadine Rooms
The regional building type features thick walls, deep window reveals, and paneled rooms. The reveals are ideal places for benches and lamps, and the paneling tolerates a clear contrast of metal and stone. Because the windows are small, artificial light is more important than in new buildings: floor lamps and table lamps on multiple levels are essential here.
Season, Delivery, Customs
The valley lives in two seasons with quiet weeks in between. Precisely this interim period in May and October is the best delivery window, as roads are clear and craftsmen are available.
