Sylt is a unique market with a very distinct building type: the thatched-roof house. It is low, warm, dark under the roof, and situated in a landscape where the wind never quite ceases. Both factors influence furniture choices compared to the mainland.
Low under the thatch
On the upper floor, the ceiling follows the roof pitch, knee walls are low, and the usable height is often less than two meters. Tall cabinets and large ceiling lights are out of the question there. What works are flat ceiling lights, wall lights on the knee walls, and low furniture that does not touch the sloped ceiling. More is possible on the ground floor, but even there, rooms tend to be wide rather than high.
Wind and salt
On Sylt, it is almost always windy. Patio furniture needs weight, parasols heavy bases, and anything light must be put away in the evening. Salt in the air attacks unprotected metals, even several hundred meters from the waterline. For outdoor use, the same rule applies as in the Mediterranean: coated metals, corrosion-resistant connections, fast-drying upholstery.
The light is bright and cool
Northern light is clear but cool, and it often comes from a wide, bright expanse. In this light, cool grey tones quickly appear pale. Warm, muted tones and plenty of texture work better: bouclé, linen, brushed wood, complemented by lanterns for the evening. Many houses are second homes and stand empty in winter. As in Mallorca, air circulation is more important than covers, and removable covers are an advantage.
