Furnishing a library: shelving unit, reading chair, lighting

A library is the only room where the content dictates the design. Books bring colour, texture, and acoustics. Therefore, the furnishings need to do little, but do that little correctly.

Shelf Dimensions Books Truly Need

  • Depth: 25 to 30 centimetres are sufficient for almost everything. Deeper shelves lead to books disappearing in a second row.
  • Shelf Height: 22 to 25 centimetres for paperbacks and novels, 30 to 35 centimetres for illustrated books. Plan for at least one taller shelf.
  • Shelf Width: Not exceeding 80 centimetres free-standing, otherwise shelves will sag under the weight.
  • Load Capacity: One metre of filled shelf can quickly weigh 30 to 40 kilograms. For wall mounting, the subsurface is crucial.

The Reading Chair

A reading chair is not a living room armchair. It requires a higher backrest than usual, a seat depth that allows one to sit with legs drawn up, and armrests at the correct height for holding a book. Beside it belongs a side table for a cup and glasses, and behind or to the side, a floor lamp whose light falls over the shoulder onto the page. A reading spot without its own lamp will not be used.

Light and Book Protection

Direct sunlight fades book spines within a few years, uniformly and irreversibly. Therefore, shelving units should not be placed opposite a south-facing window, or curtains will be necessary. For artificial light, a combination is sensible: a uniform basic brightness so titles are legible, and a strong spot at the reading chair.

Acoustics and Comfort

Filled shelves are excellent sound absorbers, which is why libraries almost automatically appear quiet. A rug enhances this and makes the room warm. Materials with depth fit better here than smooth surfaces: leather, wool, and wood. This room also tolerates dark wall colours better than any other, because the books bring the brightness.
