The hallway is the first room in any home and often the one with the least available space. Nevertheless, it determines the first impression, and it is the room where ill-considered purchases are most quickly regretted because they obstruct the way.
Depth is key
In a hallway, at least 90 centimeters of clear passage should remain, preferably 100. The available width thus determines the maximum furniture depth, which is usually smaller than expected: For a hallway width of 1.40 meters, a piece of furniture with a depth of 35 centimeters fits; for 1.20 meters, only one with 25 centimeters. This is precisely why there are narrow console tables; they are the only piece of furniture that fits into almost any hallway.
The classic combination
Console, mirror above it, two wall lights next to it: This arrangement has worked for centuries and is unbeatable in the hallway because it takes up no floor space. The mirror expands the narrow space, the console holds keys and mail, and the lights provide illumination at face height. Where space allows, a narrow bench complements the possibility of putting on shoes.
Light in a room without windows
Most hallways lack natural daylight. A single ceiling light there creates harsh shadows and makes the room feel like a corridor. Better are multiple light sources at different heights: wall lights by the mirror, perhaps a small table lamp on the console. Warm light colors appear friendlier in a windowless room than neutral ones.
The view from the door
When entering an apartment, one looks straight ahead. What stands there shapes the impression of the entire home. Therefore, it is worthwhile to occupy precisely this spot with a picture, a mirror, or a single object, rather than uniformly decorating the walls. Everything else in the hallway may recede.
