Luxury Furniture for Madrid

Luxury Furniture for Madrid

Madrid does not have a coastal climate, and this changes the interior design considerations: very dry air, large temperature fluctuations between summer and winter, and apartments facing the street or an inner courtyard. This page addresses the points that matter in Madrid.

Dry Air and Solid Wood

Madrid is located at over 600 meters and is one of the driest locations in Europe. Solid wood releases moisture and shrinks, even more so in winter with heating. This becomes visible in joints that open up and panels that slightly warp. Veneer on a stable substrate works less and is often the more sensible choice here. For furniture made of solid wood, it helps not to place it directly next to a radiator.

Apartment Facing the Street or Inner Courtyard

The floor plan in the Ensanche divides almost every apartment into a bright street-facing side and a dark courtyard-facing side. The courtyard side needs its own lighting concept, otherwise it will become a storage room. A large wall mirror opposite the courtyard window brings in light, and multiple light sources instead of a single ceiling light do the rest. The bright street-facing side has the opposite problem: sun and traffic noise, which heavy curtains and rugs can help with.

The Elevator in Old Buildings

Elevators in Ensanche buildings were retrofitted into the stairwell and are often less than 80 centimeters wide and barely 1.10 meters deep. Large sofas and dining table tops do not fit there. Before ordering, three measurements are crucial: elevator door, elevator cabin, and the narrowest point in the stairwell. We are happy to calculate this with you in advance before the forwarding company arrives at your door.

Delivery to Spain

Spain is part of the EU; no customs duties or import VAT apply. Delivery is by forwarding agent to the curb, transport into the apartment is not part of the delivery. This does not apply to the Canary Islands, as they are outside the EU tax territory, and separate formalities are required there. Please contact us, and we will clarify this before you place your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are customs duties incurred for delivery to Spain?

On the mainland and the Balearic Islands, no, Spain is part of the EU. Special rules apply to the Canary Islands, as they are outside the EU tax territory.

Is solid wood problematic in Madrid?

Not problematic, but more sensitive. The dry air causes wood to shrink. Keeping a distance from radiators helps, and veneer on a stable substrate works less.

Do large pieces of furniture fit into a Madrid old building elevator?

Often not. Many retrofitted elevators are less than 80 centimeters wide. Measure the door, cabin, and the narrowest point in the stairwell.
