Dry air is the real issue
In winter with heating and in summer with air conditioning, the relative humidity in Madrid apartments regularly drops below 30 percent. Solid wood then shrinks, joints open, veneer edges can detach, and natural wicker becomes brittle. Two countermeasures are effective: actively maintaining humidity, ideally between 40 and 60 percent, and for large surfaces, choosing veneer instead of solid wood, because it is more dimensionally stable. Sun and color
The light is clear and harsh. Colors appear more intense here than in Northern Europe, which is why muted tones often work better than in Paris or Amsterdam. At the same time, direct sun bleaches textiles and leather. Apartments in Barrio Salamanca with south-facing balconies therefore need interior shutters or curtains, otherwise a sofa will show a lighter side after two summers.
Old building and villa
In Barrio Salamanca, you will find apartments with high ceilings, stucco, and double doors, often with narrow elevators in the stairwell. The same applies there as in Paris: check door width, stair curve, and cabin dimensions before ordering. In the villa districts in the north, such as La Moraleja, delivery is uncritical, but the rooms are larger and can accommodate formats that would be too large in the city: long sofas, expansive dining tables, and large rugs that define a zone.
Outdoor living
Madrid uses terraces from April to October, but with high UV exposure. Weather-resistant designs are a necessity here, not a comfort, and light covers last visually longer than dark ones, because fading is less noticeable.
